Gastric Bypass Procedure
We all need a little help sometimes, and if you've adopted a regular exercise regimen and a healthy diet but still aren't quite seeing the results you're looking for, gastric bypass may be the extra step needed to reach your goals and live a healthier life.
The idea is simple and straightforward: slight changes are made to a patient's digestive system to decrease appetite and portion sizes, thus leading to weight loss.
In the procedure, the patient's stomach is divided into two sections; a smaller upper section and a larger lower section. The smaller top segment, often called the pouch, is reduced to the size of a walnut, thereby creating a decreased appetite and only allowing for small portion sizes. The bariatric surgeon then connects a small portion of the patient's small intestine to a small hole in the pouch - consumed food will then pass through this new pathway and into the small intestine, and the patient's body will absorb fewer calories.
In addition to the weight loss benefits, the procedure allows for a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Gastric sleeve surgery helps to induce weight loss by reducing food intake in a simple procedure in which the surgeon will remove approximately 75% of the patient's stomach, resulting in a new tube or "sleeve" like stomach shape that in turn holds less food. In addition, the removal of this portion of the stomach reduces the body’s level of ghrelin, a hormone commonly referred to as the hunger hormone. As a result, patients' appetites are substantially suppressed and reduced. Originally used for patients with extremely high BMI that were deemed ineligible for alternative forms of bariatric surgery, gastric sleeve surgery is now a viable option for lower BMI patients as a restrictive weight loss alternative to gastric bypass and gastric banding procedures.
With gastric sleeve surgery there is no foreign implantation into the body, as with the adjustable gastric band, and no complex intestinal change or rearrangement, as with gastric bypass.
The results of gastric sleeve surgery are rapid and effective, with statistics reporting that the weight loss associated with the procedure ranges up to 60% of the patient's excess weight.
If you're in search of a minimally-invasive, highly effective, and even adjustable and reversible weight loss surgery, a LAP-BAND may be an option worth exploring. A Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric (LAP) band is a small and flexible belt that is placed around the upper section of the stomach.
The LAP-BAND is made of silicone and featuring the ability to be tightened by adding saline to fill the band, it is connected to a port located under the abdomen. A LAP-BAND is designed to shrink and restrict the size of the stomach, and in turn the amount of food it can hold, while also substantially slowing the passage of food into the intestine. This allows patients to feel fuller faster, and consume much smaller portion sizes. And since the band can be adjusted, the size of the stomach pouch can be easily changed and altered depending on the patients' changing needs.
